Ugo La Pietra

At La Triennale di Milano, following a prolonged browsing through the fascinating collection of innovative designs produced by the Italian Design Factories, I was delighted to soon after discover an assemblage of another sort. The distinctive assortment of “head planters” on display at the museum’s Design Cafè. The imaginative, oftentimes, whimsical pieces were the creative works—molded and hand-decorated—by master ceramists from the Sicilian town Caltagirone. The collection on view here, was a result of a collaboration between the Caltagirone ceramists and Ugo La Pietra, who began working together in the 1990’s. The theme of this particular collection, commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy, was to celebrate the country’s various regions and the distinct cultural contribution of each community.
